This term we are working on the Kia Kaha program. In this program, students consider the things that make them, and other groups, the same yet different. They consider the roles that people take in order to keep a group functioning properly and the qualities that they all bring to the class.

Students also explore their rights and responsibilities as class members, and understand how important it is to respect these.

Here is an example of an activity we did.
A noughts and crosses grid was marked on the carpet. The class was divided into two groups. Each group had a leader who was responsible for answering questions and directing group members on to the grid. The teacher took turns reading out a statement to each group and the group had to decide whether the statement was a Right or a Responsibility. When a question is answered correctly, a member would be directed by the leader to sit anywhere on the grid. First team to get three members in a row wins.
